About Paolo Imbalzano
The person and practice behind the work
Relational, trauma-informed psychotherapy with close attention to the body, the nervous system, and the pace of therapeutic change.
I offer therapy in person in Shinfield, Reading, Berkshire, and online.
I am Paolo Imbalzano, a UKCP-registered psychotherapist, UKCP-registered clinical supervisor, and BACP-registered member.
I offer therapy that attends not only to thoughts and feelings, but also to how the system responds under stress, in relationships, and in the body.
I came to this work partly because I know what it is like to understand something and still not be able to shift it. That experience continues to shape how I think about therapy: not only as insight, but as work that also reaches the places where patterns are held more deeply.
It has also made me cautious about therapy that moves too quickly into explanation, advice, or technique without attending to what the person’s system can actually manage.
My approach tends to suit people looking for thoughtful, in-depth therapy that does not separate symptoms from the wider person.
How I work
My way of working is shaped by relationship, careful attention to timing and capacity, and the integration of different approaches where they genuinely fit the person, the process, and the work.
What matters to me is not only what we explore, but how we do the work: with care, transparency, and close attention to what feels possible, what feels difficult, and what may become too much along the way.
I aim to offer therapy that feels steady enough for depth, and thoughtful enough not to force what is not yet ready.

Training and professional background
My work is grounded in substantial training in relational psychotherapy, trauma-informed practice, body-based approaches, Deep Brain Reorienting, and ILF neurofeedback.
I have also completed formal training in frequency-based neurofeedback, which broadens the neurofeedback frame I bring to the work and informs how I use ILF neurofeedback within a carefully paced therapeutic process.
I practise in line with the ethical frameworks of UKCP and BACP, and I am also listed in the UKCP Supervisor Directory.
Before working full-time as a psychotherapist and supervisor, I worked in telecommunications for over 25 years.
That earlier background still shapes aspects of how I work: clear thinking, thoughtful structure, careful pacing, and regular review points.
For some clients, this helps therapy feel more grounded and manageable.
